Ganga Jatara
Suguturu Ganga Jatara is the annual Folk festival of Punganur. This festival is to offer prayers to the goddess Gangamma, who is treated as the Grama Devatha (the goddess looking after the town) of Punganur.

Sri Suguturu GangammaThis jatara has a unique existence in the district. In the early 18th century, people of Punganur, which was under the Zamindari system till independence, were afflicted with a mysterious decease, which started taking a heavy toll of them. Goddess Suguturu Gangamma arrived at Punganur then and drove away the evil spirit. Since then, the jatara is being celebrated each year with utmost devotion and frenzy.

The goddess gives darshan to people only on two days in a year, in the week immediately followed by the Holi festival. During the remaining days, the idol is locked up at a special chamber in the Zamindari palace, for the reason that the people could not withstand the power of the angry Goddess.

Since generations, Punganur witnessed the co-existence of various communities hailing from all over India and the jatara’s commencement after the Holi festival is an ample testimony to it. After abolition of zamindari system, the local rulers and their families have settled in various parts of South India, particularly in Bangalore and Chennai. But they never forgot the traditional pujas to the Goddess. Every year, they travel down to Punganur during the jatara and offer the first prayers to her, formally launching the festivities.

Local belief is that the Goddess, who remains shut from the public eye except for two days in a year, out of love and affection for people has manifested herself in eight avatars and eight temples exist for her within the purview of Punganur town and nearby areas.

As part of the festivities, over two lakh people thronged the temple of the goddess near the palace, followed by the first worship (‘tholi puja’) by the descendants of the Zamindari family. The idol was brought to the temple from the palace chambers amidst heavy fanfare and hysterical beating of drums and street performances by traditional artistes of various genres.

It was sea of humanity at Punganur on Tuesday, with the commencement of the two-day historical Suguturu Gangamma Jatara, a community festival, involving more than 200 villages in and around Punganur town and devotees from the neighbouring Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

An estimated 5 lakh people throng the jatara, consisting of over three dozen villages around Punganur. Hundreds of families who moved away from Punganur decades ago turn up at the jatara from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in large numbers.

The APSRTC plied special buses from Madanapalle, Palamaner and Chittoor for the event. Scores of local groups arranged poor feeding from morning. The district police made security arrangements for the event with over 400 cops, headed by a DSP, six Circle Inspectors and 20 Sub-Inspectors.
